What are gummy bear implants?

A couple of weeks back we wrote about saline and silicone implants. There’s another option as well we didn’t talk about. The gummy bear implants. Gummy bear, of course, is a nickname for the type. Gummy bear implants are teardrop-shaped, gel-based implants. Compared to the saline and silicone implants, they are known to retain their shape a little bit better.

Gummy bear implants have an outer silicone shell and a filler material. They have both silicone shell and silicone filling.

Advantages you ask? They retain their shape and also leave breasts naturally soft to touch. They even retain their shape if their shell is broken because of the thicker gel. Due to their strength, gummy bear implants are less likely to rupture and leak compared with other implants.

What about the disadvantages? If implants somehow leak, it’s harder to detect the leak than saline implants for example. Regular screenings become very important. You should do surveillance MRIs every couple of years.

The downside to this type of breast augmentation is that your surgeon may have to make a longer incision. This can increase the risk of visible scarring.

Traditional saline and silicone implants versus gummy bear/teardrop-shaped implants.

Saline and silicone implants are round shapes. So if implants tend to rotate over time, it won’t be a problem where gummy bear implants are teardrop-shaped. They’re thicker or denser. The gummy bear option may be preferable if you’re seeking less fullness in the upper part of your breasts. They also offer a more natural shape to the bottom half of your breasts. In case the implants rotate over time, it will be more noticeable. To prevent the rotating or shifting, the shell of the gummy bear implants are typically textured, which allows the tissue around it to grow into it.

As with any breast augmentation, the gummy bear option also has some health risks involved. All breast augmentation surgeries carry the risk for:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Pain
  • Scarring
  • Rupturing the implants
  • Wrinkling of breast tissues
  • Nipple sensation changes

The gummy bear implants are believed to be more durable and might last longer than the alternatives. That won’t come without a bigger cost though. Like we already mentioned before, as with any other implant alternative, there are also risks involved. Always consult your surgeon before making the final decision for your body type.
